CARE & MAINTENANCE

ODIES OIL FINISHES

All of our interior products are sealed with Odies Oil finish. This is a finish that when properly maintained will look great for decades. Try to prevent the build up of dust on your furniture. Heavy build up can result in scratching when cleaning and can create discoloration over the years. When wiping down your furniture always use a soft cotton cloth as some other fabrics can be abrasive. If the piece needs cleaning beyond a simple wipe down, use a damp rag and diluted mild soap if necessary. Do not allow water or any other liquid to stand on the surfaces or your furniture. Spills and moisture should be wiped away immediately. The natural color and beauty found in all of your wood furniture can fade with direct exposure to sunlight. Whenever possible block these harmful rays with window coverings or shade screens. The general rule of thumb is this: If you are comfortable, so is your furniture. By following the recommendations found above, we can assure the longevity of all of the wooden pieces in your home.

EXTERIOR OIL FINISHES

Our exterior products are sealed with Teak Oil. This is a one-coat finish that is very forgiving and easy to apply. We recommend that you re-apply every year to keep the color and tone of your wood and follow all manufacturer instructions (cleaning, etc) before application. If you prefer the natural color deterioration of your outdoor pieces, failure to apply oil will result in a gray or silver tone. In many cases, a thorough sanding and re-seal will rejuvenate your woods natural beauty and restore color to the piece. In extreme weather conditions (excess sunlight / moisture) outdoor products may have to be sealed every few months. The general rule of thumb is this: If you are comfortable, so is your furniture. By following the recommendations found above, we can assure the longevity of all of the wooden pieces in your home.

TEMPERATURE AND HUMIDITY

Maintaining a consistent room temperature is crucial for the longevity not only of your finish, but for the wood itself. Along with consistent temperature, humidity plays a pivotal role in keeping your wood healthy. The drier conditions become, the more the wood will shrink and this can cause slight fissures in the wood and in some cases even splitting. By utilizing a humidifier in the winter months you keep much needed moisture in the air that will keep your wood from shrinking and maintain the 50% relative humidity that all of your wooden pieces thrive in. If you have a lot of wood in your home we recommend that you utilize an RH Hygrometer to make sure conditions are neither too humid nor too dry.

Wood is a living and breathing material that will respond to all temperature changes. The general rule of thumb is this: If you are comfortable, so is your furniture. By following the recommendations found above, we can assure the longevity of all of the wooden pieces in your home.
